Compaction equipment is a type of construction equipment that is used to press down soil or gravel in order to flatten and compact the ground, resulting in a solid support structure for things to be built on top of, including houses, buildings, roads, etc. There are three main categories of compaction equipment: plate compactors, rammers, and compaction rollers. These different types of compaction equipment are used in different situations because of the size of the area they can apply pressure to and the amount of force they exude. In this article, we’ll dive deeper into the different types of compaction equipment and talk about the types of jobs and applications they are used for! Plate Compactors
Plate compactors are one of the three main categories of compaction equipment. Plate compactors can be used to compact multiple different materials, including soil, sand, gravel, and asphalt. This form of compaction equipment includes a heavy steel plate that sits parallel to the ground, where it vibrates and impacts the ground, creating a denser surface. Plate compactors are more lightweight than rollers but typically have a larger foot than rammers, making them ideal for mid-sized projects like walkways, sidewalks, and other jobs that require compacting loose soil.
Rammers
Rammers are another one of the three main categories of compaction equipment. Also known as compaction rammers, tamping rammers, or “Jumping Jacks”, rammers have a steel plate or “foot” that vibrates and compacts the ground underneath it. The main differences between rammers and plate compactors are that a rammer has an upright design and a steel plate or “foot” that is much smaller than the steel plate on a plate compactor, making the rammer ideal for narrow spaces. Rammers also have the ability to compact layers of soil that are much deeper than a plate compactor.
Compaction Rollers
Compaction rollers are the last main category of compaction equipment. Unlike plate compactors and rammers, compaction rollers are large, bulky machines that can compact a wide area quickly and efficiently. While plate compactor and rammers compact surfaces using a vibrating, flat steel plate, compaction rollers instead use their weight and large, cylindrical drums to roll-over surfaces and compact them that way. Compaction rollers are ideal for bigger applications like the construction of roads, highways, and other large projects.
